In this myth, Hercules was tasked with one of his twelve trials, which was to slay the monstrous lion of Nemea (the Nemean Lion). Hercules headed to the forest and shot his proud arrows at the man-eating lion, but they had no effect on the immortal lion… He decided to fight in the forest with a club made from oak wood.
He hit the lion’s head hard enough to split it in two with the club, but the lion remained unchanged, and the club was split in two. In the end, it is said that Hercules strangled the lion to death. In honor of Hercules’ achievements, Zeus, the king of the gods, raised the man-eating lion to the stars in the sky.
