Phoenician King Agenor had a daughter named Europa, a woman of unparalleled beauty. Her beauty was known even to the gods in heaven. One day, while Europa was picking grass at a seaside pasture, a ‘snow-white bull’ appeared out of nowhere and crouched beside her. Europa decided to ride on the bull’s back. The bull started running in an instant, crossing the sea as if it were land.

It crossed mountains, traversed the Mediterranean Sea, and finally reached the island of Crete, where it let Europa down from its back. Then, the white bull revealed its true identity as ‘Zeus’. Europa and Zeus later became united in this land. The white bull, transformed by Zeus, was lifted into the winter night sky and became Taurus. The land of this escape is said to be what is now known as Europe.
